Here we are presented with the Coleman Phad X2 Two Man Backpacking Tent up for review, this is another of Coleman’s backpacking range of tents aimed specifically at the backpacker and serious fell walker who wants a lightweight 2 man tent for hiking trips on the fells.
The design of the Coleman Phad X2 Two Man tent is a semi geodesic structure which we do not see very often in the 2 man configuration nowadays. The tent poles are aluminium in construction and the flysheet is made from tear resistant material for longer life and greater durability. Coleman have also included an integrated groundsheet which is removable via a zipper for perhaps cleaning the tent.
The geodesic design makes for a very sturdy tent which will stand up very well to cross winds and gales which you often on the fells. We took the Coleman Phad X2 2 Man Backpacking Tent up to Snowdonia to review it’s capabilities and abilities. The winds up there were 70 mph all day giving the tent a serious test which it stood to very well. During this onslaught the tents poles were very stressed and the main tent body flattened against the wind but when the wind subsided the tent sprang back to it’s standard shape easily leaving us very impressed.
Coleman have included some nice mesh panels into the design of the Coleman Phad X2 2 Man Tent designed to keep the flying insects out which can hamper camping expeditions somewhat so these were very welcome. The ventilation system is also first rate and well made, you also get a total of six pockets inside of the tent to store all those bits and pieces which you need when on a camping holiday we found these pockets to be very useful.
When we pitched the tent we had to use all 14 of the guy ropes as the wind was that strong, the tent pegs did a good job of fixing the tent to the ground. we also used a few heavy stones to further anchor the tent to the ground as it as in danger of blowing away in the strong crosswinds which we encountered that day, it also rained heavily on the night and we were pleased to see that no water entered the Coleman Phad X2 which we were very grateful for.
Weighing in at around 3.5 kg this is not a truly lightweight 2 man tent but it is pretty good, it is just as suitable for a rock concert as well as the fells, it is well made, strong and weather tight in all weathers so we highly rate this two man tent from Coleman.
